HYDROX BIO 220 is a biodegradable lubricant based on synthetic esters, developed primarily for use in sterntubes and bearings where water ingress may occur. The product provides:

  • Superior level of lubrication even when water ingress occurs
  • Excellent wear protection
  • Excellent corrosion protection
  • Compatibility with metals commonly used
  • Biodegradable and non-toxic

HYDROX BIO 220 will absorb sea or fresh water entering the sterntube to form a fluid emulsion. This reduces the risk of free water being present and continues to provide the required lubrication and corrosion protection. (Conventional oils do not emulsify in the same way and tend to separate, exposing components to free water and potential wear damage.)

HYDROX BIO lubricants achieve a biodegradability of greater than 60% in the 28 day OECD 301B and OECD 306 tests and are considered non-toxic in the marine environment based on the following results:

HYDROX BIO 220 meets the detailed ecological definitions and requirements laid down in the 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP) published by the US EPA in March 2013.

HYDROX BIO 220 lubricants (both neat oil and emulsion including 20% water contamination) has been successfully tested by Class and its stability, lubricating and corrosion protection performance has been verified by Lloyds Register.

HYDROX BIO 220 has become widely accepted as the lubricant of choice should vessels require emergency assistance in reducing leakage from the sterntube past a damaged or worn aft seal. It outperforms other competing biodegradable leak reducing lubricants by forming a stable, high viscosity emulsion at the point of water entry.

In the majority of cases a significant reduction in leakage rate can be achieved, typically up to 70%. The lubricant offers the greatest benefit when used to completely fill the sterntube system.

This product is approved by many of the leading OEMs such as KEMEL, SKF Marine (B+V) and Wärtsilä and for up to 5 years when used with OEM elastomers recommended for EALs. For specific details please contact us.

Customer Service – Going the Extra Mile

Since 1828, when Vickers Oils began trading, our reputation has been built on the quality of the products we produce and the quality of the service we give to our customers. During that time our innovative products have become recognised as being the best available and we enjoy the recognition of being market leaders in the development of Marine EALs.

The level of customer service we give our customers has also long been recognised as one of the benefits of choosing the Vickers brand. Our personal, one-to-one service is still something our customers prefer and something we are rightly proud of. We receive hundreds of enquiries every week at our headquarters in Leeds, and all are dealt with in an efficient and timely manner. However, in recent weeks we have had three separate occasions when, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our Sales team in Leeds and the co-operation of our Agents and Stockists in Singapore, Holland, Spain and South Africa we have been able to go ‘the extra mile’ in terms of ensuring our customers received the support they required, when they needed it.

The first was when one of our largest customers had a vessel in dry-dock in Singapore. The vessel reported a seal failure and as a result lost all of the stern tube lubricants. They needed replacement product urgently, so the decision was taken to airfreight the product from Leeds to Singapore. The products left Leeds at midday on the Wednesday and on the Friday was cleared by customs in Singapore and was delivered to the shipyard at 8 a.m.

The second occasion again happened recently, when a customer requested a large order of our HYDROX BIO to be delivered in Cadiz, during a public holiday. Responding to their urgent request, we arranged to immediately transfer product from our stock in Rotterdam to our Agent based in Algeciras. Thanks to the co-operation and commitment from our Agents, the supply could be made to the vessel without any delay.

Lastly, and to show that we provide this level of service to our customers no matter how large the company, we received an urgent enquiry from a new customer in Holland, who was the agent for a ship under repair in Cape Town. Class had told the owners that the vessel could not leave until its stern tube had been filled with HYDROX BIO 220. We received the order in the morning and by the middle of the afternoon, the required one drum had been delivered and the vessel was able to leave Cape Town as scheduled, which was much appreciated by the vessel agent and owner.

We always pride ourselves on the level of service and commitment we offer to our customers and whilst we have chosen to highlight these three recent incidents, they happen on a regular basis. Dennis Connell, Sales Office Manager said, “the efforts made in ensuring these three orders were supplied when our customers needed our help, just underlines the level of support and co-operation between our Sales Office team in Leeds and our network of Agents and Stockists around the globe”.

In 2002, after 9 years of extensive R&D, Vickers Oils launched the world’s first commercially available range of biodegradable sterntube lubricants. Today we supply thousands of vessels with our award winning range of products, delivered globally with unparalleled experience and expertise. We have a growing range of environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs) designed to provide excellent lubrication of the sterntube bearings.

Our EAL range of sterntube lubricants are approved by many of the leading OEMs, for up to 5 years, and should always be used in accordance with OEM guidelines. To obtain more information click on the appropriate OEM below and please do not hesitate to contact us directly for more specific detail.

It is important to ensure that when changing the lubricant in the sterntube that the system is drained thoroughly of any used oil and flushed if necessary. Any residual oil may reduce the life of the fresh oil and impair its performance. We recommend the regular use of a comprehensive oil condition monitoring test suite appropriate to EALs – to join our Condition Monitoring Service click here. Vickers Oils does not recommend the mixing of oils and will not accept any product liability where our EALs have been mixed with another fluid.

Synthetic non-emulsifiable ester based lubricant

ECOSTERN SMX is an environmentally acceptable lubricant (EAL) based on synthetic esters which meets the detailed ecological definitions and requirements laid down in Vessel General Permit (VGP).

Through the careful selection of esters and additives, ECOSTERN SMX demonstrates improved hydrolytic stability (resistance to breakdown by water in high temperature situations) and better oxidative stability (longer fluid life) compared to competitor oils.

This product does not emulsify with water and is intended for owners who prefer to separate off any excess water. It is necessary to remove free water in order to avoid corrosion on standing or damage to the bearing which is not protected from the danger of low viscosity free water.

This product does not reduce oil transfer across the seals or provide leak reduction where seals may become damaged

Mineral based emulsifiable lubricant

HYDROX and NEOX are ranges of mineral based sterntube lubricants which provide excellent wear and corrosion protection.

HYDROX and NEOX will absorb sea or fresh water entering the sterntube to form a fluid emulsion. This reduces the risk of free water being present and continues to provide the required lubrication and corrosion protection. Conventional oils do not emulsify in the same way and tend to separate, exposing components to free water and potential wear damage.

  • HYDROX 550 is a SAE 30 lubricant which is generally recommended by the bearing and seal manufacturers for regular running in the sterntube.
  • HYDROX 21 is recommended for use particularly where problems of oil leakage past the aft seals is being experienced. In the majority of cases a significant reduction in leakage rate can be achieved.
  • NEOX 8000 is recommended for use when compression or older face seals are fitted with non-circulatory oil feed systems.
  • NEOX D is a grease-like lubricate recommended for use in some compression seals.

The emulsion is stable and continues to provide the required lubrication and corrosion protection. Conventional oils do not emulsify in the same way and tend to separate, exposing components to free water and potential wear damage.

HYDROX BIO lubricants (ISO VG 68, 100 and 220) are biodegradable lubricants developed primarily for use in sterntube applications where elastomeric lip seals and circulatory oil feed systems are fitted. The products provide:

HYDROX BIO meets the detailed ecologoical definitions and requirements laid down in the 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP) published by the US EPA in March 2013.

HYDROX BIO lubricants (both neat oil; and also emulsion including 20% water contamination) have been successfully tested by Class and their stability, lubricating and corrosion protection performance have been verified (Lloyds Register Product Verification Certificate No. PVS02 00001/A5).

HYDROX BIO 68 and HYDROX BIO 100

HYDROX BIO 68 and HYDROX BIO 100 are the viscosity grades generally recommended by the bearing and seal manufacturers for regular running in the sterntube. They can also be used for certain stabiliser systems. These products are approved by many of the leading OEMs such as B+V, Wartsila and Kemel. For specific details please contact us.

HYDROX BIO 220

HYDROX BIO 220 has become widely accepted as the lubricant of choice should vessels require emergency assistance in reducing leakage from the sterntube past a damaged or worn aft seal. It outperforms other competing biodegradable leak reducing lubricants.

In the majority of cases a significant reduction in leakage rate can be achieved, typically up to 70%. The lubricant offers the greatest benefit when used to completely fill the sterntube system.
