HYDROX BIO 68 is a biodegradable lubricant based on synthetic esters, developed primarily for use in sterntubes and bearings where water ingress may occur. The product provides:

  • Superior level of lubrication even when water ingress occurs
  • Excellent wear protection
  • Excellent corrosion protection
  • Compatibility with metals commonly used
  • Biodegradable and non-toxic

HYDROX BIO 68 will absorb sea or fresh water entering the sterntube to form a fluid emulsion. This reduces the risk of free water being present and continues to provide the required lubrication and corrosion protection. (Conventional oils do not emulsify in the same way and tend to separate, exposing components to free water and potential wear damage.)

HYDROX BIO lubricants achieve a biodegradability of greater than 60% in the 28 day OECD 301B and OECD 306 tests and are considered non-toxic in the marine environment based on the following results:

HYDROX BIO 68 meets the detailed ecological definitions and requirements laid down in the 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP) published by the US EPA in March 2013.

HYDROX BIO 68 (both neat oil and emulsion including 20% water contamination) has been successfully tested by Class and its stability, lubricating and corrosion protection performance has been verified by Lloyds Register.

HYDROX BIO 68 is a viscosity grade generally recommended by the bearing and seal manufacturers for regular running in the sterntube. HYDROX BIO 68 can also be used in certain stabiliser systems and CPP hubs.

This product is approved by many of the leading OEMs such as KEMEL, SKF Marine (B+V) and Wärtsilä and for up to 5 years when used with OEM elastomers recommended for EALs. For specific details please contact us.

These lubricants are based on fully saturated synthetic esters with a high degree of renewability and use state-of-the art technology.

BIOGEAR XP is designed for use in sensitive environments where there is a potential for fluid loss to occur, for example from thrusters and some CPP designs.

BIOGEAR XP is miscible with common mineral based gear oils, but in line with good practice, old lubricants should be drained completely to avoid any risk of additive incompatibility and ensure that the full benefits and performance are achieved. Water content should not exceed 0.1% and any free water must be separated off on a regular basis. Unlike the HYDROX range, these lubricants do not emulsify in water.

These mineral based lubricants provide an excellent level of lubrication in both neat and emulsion forms. They are developed primarily for use in sterntubes. The products provide:

  • Superior level of lubrication even when water ingress occurs
  • Excellent wear protection
  • Excellent corrosion protection
  • Compatibility with metals commonly used

HYDROX 550 is compatible with the elastomers used for lip seal systems and are approved by the major lip and face stern seal manufacturers.

HYDROX 550 will absorb any sea or fresh water entering the sterntube to form a fluid emulsion. This reduces the risk of free water being present and continues to provide the required lubrication and corrosion protection. (Conventional oils do not emulsify in the same way and tend to separate, exposing components to free water and potential wear damage).

The emulsions, once formed, have excellent stability, therefore free water is not released. This ensures corrosion protection is maintained even during prolonged standing and during the critical time of start-up.

HYDROX 550 (both neat oil and emulsion including 20% water contamination) has been successfully tested by Class and their stability, lubricating and corrosion protection performance have been verified by Lloyds Register.

HYDROX 550 (ISO 68) is the viscosity grade generally recommended by the bearing and seal manufacturers for regular running in the sterntube.

HYDROX BIO 220 has become widely accepted as the lubricant of choice should vessels require emergency assistance in reducing leakage from the sterntube past a damaged or worn aft seal. It outperforms other competing biodegradable leak reducing lubricants by forming a stable, high viscosity emulsion at the point of water entry.

In the majority of cases a significant reduction in leakage rate can be achieved, typically up to 70%. The lubricant offers the greatest benefit when used to completely fill the sterntube system.

With the appearance of a growing number of regulatory requirements and initiatives mandating or incentivising the adoption of EALs, we have the experience and expertise to ease the transition from mineral lubricants, and deliver cost efficiency and performance benefits in the process.

In 2002 Vickers Oils became the first company to make Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) commercially available to the global marine market, in response to requests from concerned customers who wished to minimise the potential impact of their operations on the marine environment.

Eleven years later the use of EALs in below-the-waterline equipment was mandated for vessels calling in US waters by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in its 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP).
